Magnetization plateaus in frustrated antiferromagnetic quantum spin models

چکیده
Plateaus can be observed in the zero-temperature magnetization curve of quantum spin systems at rational values of the magnetization. In one dimension, the appearance of a plateau is controlled by a quantization condition for the magnetization which involves the length of the local spin and the volume of a translational unit cell of the ground state. We discuss examples of geometrically frustrated quantum spin systems with large (in general unbounded) periodicities of spontaneous breaking of translational symmetry in the ground state. In two dimensions, we discuss the square, triangular and Kagomé lattices using exact diagonalization (ED) for up to N = 40 sites. For the spin-1/2 XXZ model on the triangular lattice we study the nature and stability region of a plateau at one third of the saturation magnetization. The Kagomé lattice gives rise to particularly rich behaviour with several plateaus in the magnetization curve and a jump due to local magnon excitations just below saturation. Submitted to: J. Frustration effects in antiferromagnetic molecules: the cuboctahedron
Frustration of magnetic systems which is caused by competing interactions is the driving force of several unusual phenomena such as plateaus and jumps of the magnetization curve as well as of unusual energy spectra with for instance many singlet levels below the first triplet state. The antiferromagnetic cuboctahedron can serve as a paradigmatic example of certain frustrated antiferromagnets. I...
متن کاملMultiple frustration-induced plateaus in a magnetization process of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain
Abstract. Magnetization process of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain is examined by combining three exact analytical techniques: Kambe projection method, decoration-iteration transformation and transfer-matrix method. Multiple frustrationinduced plateaus in a magnetization process of this geometrically frustrated system are found provided that a relative ratio betwe...
متن کاملUltra-robust high-field magnetization plateau and supersolidity in bond-frustrated MnCr2S4
Frustrated magnets provide a promising avenue for realizing exotic quantum states of matter, such as spin liquids and spin ice or complex spin molecules. Under an external magnetic field, frustrated magnets can exhibit fractional magnetization plateaus related to definite spin patterns stabilized by field-induced lattice distortions. Magnetization and ultrasound experiments in MnCr2S4 up to 60 ...
متن کاملField-Induced Effects of Anisotropic Magnetic Interactions in SrCu2(BO3)2
We observed a field-induced staggered magnetization in the 2D frustrated dimer singlet spin system SrCu2(BO3)2 by B NMR, from which the magnitudes of the intradimer Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction and the staggered g-tensor were determined. These anisotropic interactions cause singlet-triplet mixing and eliminate a quantum phase transition at the expected critical field Hc for gap closing. The...
متن کاملFirst-Order Phase Transitions in Frustrated Spin Systems
We give a short review of our recent works on the first-order quantum phase transitions in frustrated spin chains with orthogonal-dimer structure. When the ratio of the competing antiferromagnetic exchange couplings is varied, a first-order transition occurs between the dimer phase and the plaquette phase, which is accompanied by the discontinuity in the spin excitation gap. We further show tha...
